Why I Wont Be Reading Your Cover Letter -

Why I Won't Be Reading Your Cover Letter - We as of late had a vacant position we were attempting to fill and I was stunnedâ€"or should I say horrifiedâ€"at the sweeping reactions we got from work searchers. Potential applicants sent us introductory letters portraying experience they had that was totally superfluous to our opening; it was equivalent to somebody having a degree in veterinary medication yet looking for work as an IT executive. Carried out these responsibility searchers truly feel that continuing endlessly for sections about immaterial experience was going to make me need to peruse their resumeâ€"or much more soâ€"talk with them? I think I comprehend the difficulty here: Truly dynamic employment searchers are conveying incalculable requests for employment as fast as humanly conceivableâ€"most likely exasperated by the sheer volume of uses they feel constrained to submit. It is anything but a one in million shot game, people. Or a round of numbers. I really don't trust it's where you need to submit 200 applications to get two call-backs. What it comes down to involves center and importance. Would you be able to make the relationship between's your experience and profession foundation and what the business really needs? I'll give you an ideal model. We every so often will have openings for confirmed or proficient resume scholars. We place a promotion for the opening on the web with some unmistakable necessities and ask that the up-and-comer react with substantial and persuading reasons why the individual in question would be the best fit. A few up-and-comers continue foreverâ€"perpetuallyâ€"about having created books, composed articles for clinical diaries, or their specialized composing experience. None of which shares anything for all intents and purpose with continue composingâ€"other than composing. This is baffling to employing chiefs as they are swimming through several requests for employment. It nearly appears to be an exercise in futility. I end up speculation, For what reason wouldn't they be able to mention to me what I have to know? I indicate in the promotion that I have to think about measures A, B, and Câ€"and whether you have those aptitudes. Ninety-nine percent of employment searchers neglect to address their i nvolvement with these regions. Why? I don't know whether it's apathy or a consequence of being overpoweredâ€"however what I can let you know is that you're just harming yourself and your odds for a meeting. I realize that when you're submitting the same number of uses as you can you may feel rushed, hurried, or as you don't have the opportunity to make an altered submittal. In all honesty, you're burning through additional time in the event that you don't. Set aside the effort to explicitly address every necessity, and furnish the recruiting administrator with indisputably the most important experience you have that coordinates the prerequisites of the position. You might be astounded at the outcomes. Jessica Holbrook Hernandez is a specialist continue essayist, vocation and individual marking planner, writer, speaker and President/CEO of Great Resumes Fast. Phantoms Exploring Weird Tales Vol 5, No. 1

PHANTOMS: EXPLORING WEIRD TALES Vol. 5, No. 1â€"PART 28 Well, we’ve carried out it. We’ve made it to the tip of our months-long exploration of the January 1925 concern of Weird Taleswith the quick story “Phantoms” by Laurence R. D’Orsay. Let’s take this story as a chance not simply to enjoy one final Weird Tale, totally on its own merits, however to muse a bit on what we’ve realized from this ongoing time journey ninety-five years into the previous and the beginnings of the trendy horror and dark fantasy genres. We’ve read some great stories, some not so great. We’ve met authors who stay mysterious and some whose work has stood the check of time. And now we come to… Often sufficient prior to now I’ve stated that suspense comes from an imbalance in data. You’ve let your readers in on something the POV character in a specific scene doesn’t know, and that lack of know-how is sending her into danger while we cringe understanding what’s across the nook, ready for her. Or one character knows something another doesn†™t and we (your readers) see the manipulation or the ignorance… the battle inherent in that, and we squirm. Here’s a fantastic example of two characters who know something we readers don’t know, and the suspense comes within the type of: What are they talking about? What did he say? What happened? Why does Sellars need Carson to neglect he heard it? “I would promise, and welcome,” said the other slowly, “if it weren’t for the victims. The baby, man! You know, Sellars, your case is critical. If you die with that on your soul! I guess I’m old fashioned and all that; however the baby, aside from theâ€"the opposite factorâ€"abandoned, as you say, in the woods! See a priestâ€"let me name Father Quinn. My God, Sellars!” There’s definitely one thing terrible occurring here, or one thing terrible has happened. Even the telling of it's traumatic. It’s a intelligent approach to open a story in media res, that’s for sure. I get into more detail on that in my post “Pun ch, Push, Explain.” As the story progresses we fall into a flashback, which is ok by me, but here’s an excellent example of what I was speaking about in my post “I Had Encountered Past Perfect Tense Far Too Many Times Before Writing This Post.” I would depart the first paragraph of this example alone: This was the third day that he had passed alone in the old cabin since Martha died. But three daysâ€"they seemed like years. Like years it seemed since he had returned in his skiff from Vallejo to his residence above the inlet and Martha, noting his drunken state, had began the argument. This units in the readers’ minds that we’re now going again in time, that a flashback has begun. Here are the following two paragraphs as printed: It had degenerated into the same old squabble, for each had been of uncertain temper. Martha, womanlike, seeing that she was being worsted within the argument, had pushed him through the door of the cabin, causing him to land full-length within t he sticky mud outside. Then he had risen in a towering rage and, grabbing a heavy iron bar, had dealt a terrific blow at his spouse’s head, anticipating to see her dodge as on many related occasions. But she had slipped and lost her balance, and with a crunching, sickening sound the bar had descended on her unprotected head. He may see her now, mendacity the place she had dropped with no cry or groan. With a bonus edit to make it a smidge less overtly sexist, right here’s how I’d somewhat it learn: It degenerated into the same old squabble, for both have been of uncertain mood. Martha, seeing she was being worsted in the argument, pushed him through the door of the cabin, causing him to land full-size within the sticky mud outdoors. Then he rose in a towering rage and, grabbing a heavy iron bar, dealt a terrific blow at his spouse’s head, anticipating to see her dodge as on many similar events. But she slipped and lost her steadiness, and with a crunching, sickening sound th e bar descended on her unprotected head. He might see her now, lying the place she had dropped and not using a cry or groan. Once it’s clear we’re a step farther again in time, let the story live there. I left the last sentence alone to point out how that can remind us we’re in a flashback and imply we’re coming out of it with “mendacity where she had dropped.” But in the actual story, the flashback continues with had after had after had after… On page 176, the word had appears twenty-5 times. This might not seem like a giant deal, but learn this story once more, having had had pointed out, and let me know what you suppose. What then follows, I suppose, is a scary, enjoyable ghost story that may not be essentially the most authentic of tales, however it was weird, and I dug it. This is one other story of a felony pushed mad by guilt, seeing ghosts both actual or imagined, and hounded to his grave by the burden of his misdeeds. Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” first r evealed in 1843, predates “Phantoms” by eighty-two years, but so what? This is a sort of ghost story that’s been told again and again ever since, and the originality comes in the writer’s unique spin on it. As for “Phantoms,” I favored the epilogue by which Carson dismisses the supernatural as the result of a “structure undermined by long and excessive use of alcohol and drugs.” There was no ghost hell-bent on revenge. Sellars was simply nuts. This is a simple but efficient example of what I referred to as “The Persistence of the Logical.” And so there we have it for our last story: two optimistic examples and one negativeâ€"not a foul ratio for Laurence R. D’Orsay, who, wrote a handful of stories and a single novel, and wrote books on writing. Looks like all those books, and his novel, are long out of print. Too badâ€"I’m going to regulate the used market in any case. And there we've it for Weird Tales Vol. 5, Number 1, from January of 1925, a glance again a t style fiction in its formative years. Throughout this sequence, as with “Phantoms” by itself, there are optimistic examplesâ€"what to do in your individual writingâ€"and unfavorable examplesâ€"what not to do in your own writingâ€"in each story. Though in terms of lots of components of the craft of writing (the place the comma goes, is a semi-colon okay right here?) it’s typically extra instructive to read newer fiction, storytelling has changed in only fairly refined ways within the many years between the initial release of this pulp magazine and now, and constructive and adverse lessons are right here for us all to soak up, take into consideration , and make of them what we'll. And for these of us who simply love the whole historical past of science fiction, fantasy, and horror… properly, long reside pulp! â€"Philip Athans Whether your writing is new pulp, old pulp, or no pulp at all, look to Athans & Associates Creative Consulting for story/line/developmental editing at three ¢ per word. Heres What You Missed At Glassdoors Biggest Event of the Year

This is what You Missed At Glassdoor's Biggest Event of the Year This is what You Missed At Glassdoor's Biggest Event of the Year Its a well known fact that pulling in qualified competitors is a colossal agony point for scouts. Be that as it may, fortunately today, there's an exceptional measure of data on organizations out there - and the best applicants are utilizing that data to self-select into the correct jobs and associations for them, guaranteeing accomplishment on the two sides of the fence. Be that as it may, how precisely do you draw in and hold those educated applicants? That is actually the inquiry that Glassdoor Recruit - Glassdoor's first-ever enrolling centered gathering - set out to reply. Through a progression of introductions, boards, workshops and then some, Glassdoor Recruit shared significant data on how the present driving associations can draw in and hold educated applicants who will add to their way of life and drive business results. Here are a couple of features from the occasion. Glassdoor CEO Robert Hohman opened Recruit by inviting the more than 7,000 visitors and revealing some insight into the condition of the ability advertise today . While selection representatives battle with things like spending limitations, rivaling remuneration and advantages and realizing where to promote employments, Hohman shared that the main test was drawing in quality competitors, as per 75 percent of members in an ongoing survey from Glassdoor and a main outsider examiner firm.* The present organizations need applicants who are exceptionally drawn in, very much investigated, and have the correct desires: at the end of the day, educated up-and-comers. This isn't only significant for filling open demands at the time - study members concurred that educated competitors bring about better maintenance, profitability, commitment, collaboration, and generally speaking representative experience. So what would you be able to do to bring those educated applicants into your organization? The most ideal approach to make these associations with up-and-comers is for you to ensure that your enrolling and boss brand situating mirrors your world, Hohman said. Educated competitors are truly out there right now on Glassdoor exploring your organization… the objective is to ensure that they comprehend what in your work is significant and lined up with them. To share the insider facts of how they draw in educated competitors, agents from T-Mobile, Bain and Company, Hubspot and Major League Baseball made that big appearance in a board directed by J.T. O'Donnell, Founder and CEO of vocation exhortation site Work It Daily . They talked about the absolute greatest difficulties they face, ways they expand proficiency in the enlisting procedure and how to address pointed inquiries. We discovered we were selecting a similar path for everyone, and that didn't work. You don't select innovation and lithe pros in a gig economy a similar way you'd employ in volume for deals, or for care. We made a major move to implant our spotters into our specialty units - they still are a piece of our HR group, however they're a piece of the nearby HR group as opposed to halfway run. - Martin Pisciotti, VP Employee Careers, T-Mobile Working with Bain's profound mastery and progressed examination - we consider them the AAG group - [we bring] those information researchers in to assist us with discovering progressively effective approaches to screen resumes. In any event, we can take the thousands that we're getting in the front end and separate that down to the set that has the most elevated potential up-and-comer source. - Keith Bevans, Partner, Global Head of Consultant Recruiting, Bain and Company What we've put resources into is significantly more focused on content at each phase of the pipe, so in case you're simply visiting, we make it considerably more likely that you'll change over. In case you're looking at us and thinking about an offer, we attempt and make content piece of the explanation you really pick [Hubspot] so you don't need to scan for a worker who accommodates your profile or is managing comparative difficulties to you. We need you to find that promptly and accessibly. - Katie Burke, Chief People Officer, HubSpot We've currently begun attempting to empower office heads, contingent upon the sort of occupation they're hoping to fill, to give [candidates] a genuine test about what they may need to do - give them a theoretical and have them compose a notice, or give them a reality design and [ask], 'How might you direct the examination?' for instance. You can gain so much from that. - Steven Gonzalez, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel â€" Labor and Human Resources, Major League Baseball In an authentic talk with the crowd, United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz - one of the Highest Rated CEOs for 2017 - dove profound into the difficulties he confronted at an early stage, including low representative confidence, a brush with death and one specific PR storm including the persuasive expulsion of a traveler from an airplane. In spite of all that, worker assessment has soar under Munoz, thus driving record-breaking on-time execution and rising consumer loyalty scores. The way to pulling it off was idiotic basic, Munoz stated: I simply halted and tuned in, and I listened eagerly… It's anything but difficult to believe that you're keen to the point, that you realize what's up and you go fix that, yet [employees will say] 'I needed my oil changed, for what reason did you give me new tires?' When they realize that they've given info, and that you've tuned in and gained from it and gave criticism, it has a gigantic effect in the straightforward thing that I need in our business: human communication and human association… from that, we've constructed a quite decent powerful that you see ideally when you travel. Concerning what he trusts his heritage to be, Munoz shared: 'Churchill stated, 'It might be the finish of the start, yet we despite everything have far to go.' Flying 100 million+ clients with 700 trips noticeable all around anytime in the day, there are in the long run going to be disappointments, so we'll keep on taking a shot at and fix that, and leave a culture of individuals truly needing to think about you. Next up was Glassdoor Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain , with solid exploration on how businesses can improve their up-and-comer experience. This falls into four key containers: Probably the most ideal approaches to urge more representatives to apply? Improving your Glassdoor surveys! One investigation demonstrated that up-and-comers who saw positive audits of an organization were fundamentally bound to apply than the individuals who hadn't. Moreover, negative audits mean candidates need higher beginning pay rates to redress. Rewarding competitors well is basic, yet you can't back off of them in the recruiting procedure - Glassdoor research shows that increasingly troublesome meetings bring about better workers. Make certain to move rapidly, as well - bosses that take more time to enlist get left behind. The main three factors that anticipate work fulfillment are profession openings, nature of senior pioneers and culture and qualities, all of which become progressively significant the more extended representatives stay. Workers leave for three principle reasons: deteriorating in a job excessively long, the organization culture is better somewhere else or the compensation is better somewhere else. Monitoring and following up on these models can assist you with keeping representatives around for the long stretch. [It's helpful] to consider the competitor venture as a lifecycle model… it's a suggestion to you that significantly after you enlist extraordinary ability and you get them ready, you're not done. You despite everything need to watch out for the applicant venture [and] keep them locked in. In such a case that you don't, the enormous hazard is eventually, individuals will begin glancing around, they will take a gander at the opposition, and they will begin an up-and-comer's excursion elsewhere, Chamberlain shared. With such a large number of studies demonstrating that different workforces lead to development and improved business execution, it's no big surprise that the present bosses are centered around pulling in and holding various ability. Be that as it may, for some businesses, it's really a test. Why would that be the situation? What's more, what would employers be able to gain from the individuals who are driving in assorted variety and end? Delegates from GoDaddy , Hyatt and The Washington Post joined Glassdoor Editorial Director Amy Elisa Jackson to talk about the subject top to bottom. We would prefer not to enlist an accomplice of individuals and afterward have them come in and go, 'This isn't the spot for me - this isn't the way of life that I was sold by the selection representative,' whatever that may be. So we needed to ensure that it was unquestionably a spot where they would feel included, they would feel like they could accomplish the best work of their lives. - Katee Van Horn, Vice President, Engagement and Inclusion, GoDaddy We began an effort and associations program and this was a piece of our ability promoting methodology, in saying how about we proceed to collaborate with the current chiefs in the network - DC Web Women, Girls Who Code - and how about we band together with them one-on-one, form that relationship, and afterward work with them to assemble encounters that unite that network… presently we have many individuals meeting up for an occasion, and we're ready to interface with them one-on-one and really share our way of life story. - Brenna Child, Head of Talent Management and Employer Branding, The Washington Post Until we can discuss this issue, it won't disappear. At the point when you stroll in a room, individuals state, 'I don't see shading'… yet actually I am who I am. How about we acknowledge that and we should proceed onward to something greater and more noteworthy where we as a whole include esteem. - Tyronne Stoudemire, Global Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, Hyatt On the off chance that there's any individual who might have the option to recognize the 'mystery ingredient' of astonishing associations, it's Josh Bersin, Principal Researcher and Founder of Bersin by Deloitte , a HR-centered exploration and warning firm established in 2001. In light of test tank displaying, Excipio ventures that its four fights, when stretched out and tied down to the seas base, will improve strength and decrease redirection of the turbine tower by 50 percent for a similar ocean state over customary one-fight structures. It might sound shortsighted, however all you need to do, on the off chance that you need a greater breeze turbine, is make the structure greater, Engelmann said. Also, regarding strength, when you get out into profound water, with the fights brought down, its totally steady even in tropical storm conditions. Peruse increasingly about Renewable Energy: U.S. Can Learn From Texas Surge in Wind and Solar Power Engelmann said that a great part of the stages esteem originates from its capacity to offer various vitality catch positions. Such an extensive amount the innovation associated with sustainable power source change works incredible in the correct condition, he said. The material science, the building, and the force standards all work incredible. Yet, its the expense of putting up these stages for sale to the public that disrupts the general flow. By packaging every one of these advances into a typical facilitating structure, we could kill a great deal of the fixed costs, making it significantly more financially savvy. The Excibuoy is adaptable enough to suit a few distinctive sustainable power source advancements, just as new ones as they become accessible. Notwithstanding ordinary breeze towers, these incorporate wavering water section wave catch, sea thermalenergyconversion (OTEC), and ebb and flow stream turbines. The plan can create power through OTEC gadgets. These gadgets work by utilizing sea surface temperatures to disintegrate a working liquid with a low breaking point (like alkali), which grows and drives a turbine to produce power. The fume is then come back to the sea floor, where cooler temperatures go it into a fluid. As indicated by Excipio, this will work with surface-base temperatures contrasts of 20 degrees Celsius. Peruse more on Emerging Energy Technologies: Storing Heat from Nuclear Power Plants Could Improve Output Another structure idea includes utilizing fights for swaying water section wave catch close to the surface, where waves would move cylinders inside the fight all over. Stream turbines under the fights and the stage itself could catch vitality from ebbs and flows. We anticipate that it should be more steady than some other stage in the businessand that it will permit us to productively catch wave and current vitality while supporting the breeze plant, Engelmann said. The stage is likewise adaptable enough to handily supplant old gadgets or include new sorts of sustainable power source converters as they become accessible, he included. Robinson yielded that seaward fixed breeze innovations, in general, stay more costly than those discovered coastal. What's more, unquestionably, gas power is likewise genuinely modest. Yet, he accepts, over the long haul, seaward wind will more than exhibit its value. This can possibly make enormous measures of financially savvy electrical force, he said. 7 Steps to Send a Great Post-Interview Thank You Note - Coffee Break

7 Steps to Send a Great Post-Interview Thank You Note - Coffee Break This week is all about giving thanks. In that spirit, were talking about the importance of sending a thank you note after a job interview. A thank you note not only makes you stand out, it also reminds the hiring manager about you. So before you dig into turkey and cranberry sauce this Thanksgiving, remember you have one more thing to be thankful for. Well discuss the whole methodology for sending the perfect thank you note after the break. 1. Send the Letter Within 24 Hours Its incredibly important to send the thank you note soon after the interview. Otherwise, you risk missing your window of recognition. Sending it shortly after gives them a  reminder about you. Whether that reminder is good or bad is reflected by how you performed in the interview. Either way, in order to meet the 24 hour mark, you should send an email. 2. Email the Note While email may lack the personal touch of a  handwritten note, it makes up for it in the speed category. Begin to compose an email directed towards the hiring manager, or whoever you interviewed with. Make sure you leave the To  section blank until it is ready to send however. Nobody wants a partially written thank you! 3. Keep it Professional Given the popularity of texting, many young professionals naturally use text lingo when emailing. However, this type of behavior should never be used to address those who interviewed you. It would reflect poorly on you, and hurt your chances instead of helping. This also ties in to the next point. 4. Think About Who Youre Writing To Occasionally, it can be difficult to mentally put yourself in the shoes of someone else. However, in this case it will strengthen your thank you note greatly. Look at yourself from the interviewers perspective. What skills and qualities of yours would the company benefit the most? Think about your abilities and how they can address the projects or tasks the company needs someone to carry out. Thank them, but also demonstrate your excitement and ability to fill their needs. 5. Put in a Personal Note This may not be the case for every thank you note. However, many times in an interview you may find common ground with their interviewer. As the dialogue flows, think of if there is a non interview related topic you connected on. For example, if you both discuss your love of fishing or another hobby, mention it briefly in the thank you. This gives them a reminder of how you two connected. 6. Have Someone Proofread It. This point cant be stresed enough. Misteaks like thes will make youre thank u note look week. Now youve already formed an opinion on the mistakes in those two sentences. Think about how poorly those errors would make you look as a job candidate. This is especially true if you are expected to be good with grammar or a proficient writer. Check your note yourself, but have someone else look it over  as well. Its much too easy for you to miss your own mistakes, so let someone else check for you. 7. Send It, Remain Patient At this point, youve done all the work you can. The only thing you can do now is wait patiently. While you may feel the urge to check back in every day or the next week, give it some time. Youve already followed up, and they are likely deciding between candidates. The thank you note already gave you an edge, and all you can do now is wait for a decision. Pestering the interviewer about a decision may make them see you negatively instead of having positive effect. Give it at least two weeks post-thank you to follow up one last time.

8 Lessons on How to Move Abroad For Your Job

8 Lessons on How to Move Abroad For Your Job I despite everything recollect that call, asking me whether I would be keen on considering a move abroad to take up a huge job and profession change in Singapore.Having been situated in the U.K. for my entire life, it was a decently life-extremely important occasion for me. Could this be the open door I was searching for, as Id been needing more test and rather was getting myself leveling in my job? Was this destiny venturing in?Now, I realize that for the vast majority, settling on a choice to move to another country for a new position is positively not a simple one. There are such a large number of interesting points, yet what I gained from my first abroad move has kept on supporting me all through all the ensuing moves Ive experienced all through my career. Here are eight exercises on the most proficient method to move to another country for a job.1. Consider whether you are moving alone or with your family/partner.If you move alone, your current encouraging group of people wont es sentially be there, yet additionally be careful that moving others abroad with you accompanies its own weight. Its hard not to feel liable for how well theyll incorporate into the new nation, for instance.2. Dont attempt to duplicate what you had at home.Living in a huge property with gardens and a carport is regularly unfathomable when moving to specific nations. Be readied that your day to day environments may change, however consider that to be a chance to live as local people do.3. Perceive that youll be a visitor in somebody elses country. And that implies regarding their way of life. Set aside some effort to grasp that experience, and know that social contrasts might be obvious. Frequently, these are communicated as varying work styles inside your new office. One region that despite everything shocks me is that societies have various thanks of practicality; in this way, you shouldnt fundamentally expect that since you are consistently on schedule for a gathering or call, others will be as well.4. Chase out resources. There are some extraordinary apparatuses and assets accessible to see how various societies work, similar to the site Commisceo Global, which offers free culture advisers for more than 80 nations. Utilize those to help you in improving culturally diverse understanding.5. Ensure you comprehend the fundamentals like the expense of living.Moving abroad for an occupation as a nearby recruit versus an expat are altogether different, so set aside the effort to see how much nuts and bolts like lease, food and service bills would cheapen your new salary.6. Ensure you comprehend the logistics. In a few cases, you become a duty inhabitant in the new nation relying upon your home area, however its imperative to look for some counsel ahead of time so you dont get a stun later on.7. Value your recently worldwide network.Take bit of leeway of the way that you went from a nearby to worldwide system. This is something that has demonstrated a genuine advantage for me all through my profession in my capacity to call upon partners far and wide.8. Be thankful for your transformative new opportunity. The magnificent profession improvement and encounters youll gain from it couldnt have been accomplished some other way.- - Lis Brown is a People Leader with over 25 years involvement with the Management Consulting and Technology Industries. A creative career with IBM

A creative career with IBM Graham White graduated from the University of Exeter in BSc (Hons) Computer Science and Management Science in 2000, and has been working for IBM for 20 years since joining their graduate programme.   Graham White, Certified Expert Technical Specialist, Emerging Technologies (IBM Research) I work for IBM in the world-renowned IBM Research division. My focus is applied research within the Emerging Technologies group. In this role, I generally take new technology to our clients as part of a first-of-kind project which is always hugely interesting and very exciting. It is extremely varied as I can be talking to a client about a particular solution in the morning and in the afternoon I might be working on some fundamental research with my university partners. Hence, people in my job are typically very broadly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about technology but also have at least one area of deep technical skill. It’s hard to pick just a few, but I wanted to share 3 projects I’ve been involved with in recent years: I was involved with creating a system to automatically translate spoken English into British Sign Language. The project was created by IBM interns under the Extreme Blue programme (for which I would encourage everyone reading this to consider signing up to) that hooks up experienced technical people from IBM to mentor students during a summer project. Rather than describe it in detail, take a look at this 15 second clip to get a rough idea or listen to Helen explain it. Helen has since gone on to become one of the managers in my department. This is still one of the project we get asked about on a regular basis. During 2018 I worked on a system to enhance rail travel codenamed Stepping Stone for people with disabilities and older people. This group of passengers find it harder to travel by train, and can often be extremely anxious while travelling. My solution was to create a mobile application that walks the passenger through their journey but does so by continuously linking them with a member of staff. So they can ask questions, get help, meet up with passenger service assistants and anything else they want at any point during their journey. It’s a bit like a WhatsApp type of interface where people can chat to station staff and staff on the train. It detects when they arrive at a station and contains a lot of features resulting from accessibility research so it can be used by people with visual or hearing difficulties, people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, or older people. A more commercial example of something very creative I’ve done is through our partnership with the Knorr food company. They approached us for help with a marketing campaign and through a period of consulting with them we came up with the idea of profiling flavours. The idea and tech we needed to implement involved working out the flavour profile in two respects: how people experience flavour and which ones they prefer; and which flavours different foods contain. In a broad sense, this allowed us to come up with a mapping between preferred flavour and different foods. It allowed Knorr to recommend certain products to particular individuals based entirely on the science behind which flavours they are most likely to enjoy. To give a little more background to my career, starting from when I graduated with a Computer Science and Management Science degree, I still wasn’t entirely sure what career I wanted. I had narrowed my options to management consulting or computer programming. I applied for a few roles but was really attracted to IBM as it fitted my preference of a more technical job. After a 1 day interview in London and 2 day assessment centre in Winchester I was offered a place on the graduate scheme and started work at the rather lovely IBM Hursley on 4 September 2000. The site has a similar stately home history and campus feel to it as the Streatham Campus. I formed the first Linux support team when the company invested $1 billion in transforming the IBM product line to work on Linux. My job was to provide support to the 3000 people working on site and consisted of being away from my desk a lot, either in a huge machine room working on servers or at people’s desks helping them more directly with one-to-one support. Since then, I have worked in a number of different roles that have taken me around the world. I have set up and worked on some of the world’s fastest super computers (they all run Linux); helped scientists crack some particularly hard problems such as mapping the human genome, weather prediction, seismic surveying and nuclear simulation; worked on teaching computers how to understand human speech, something we now fashionably call machine learning or artificial intelligence. The Interview A Well Rehearsed Performance or Hacked Improv

The Interview A Well Rehearsed Performance or Hacked Improv 4 Ways To Prepare For Your Upcoming Job Interview This months question investigates: What should work searchers do now to get ready for interviews? Every month I am respected to work together with a network of resume essayists and vocation mentors called the Career Collective, this post is one of many responses to thoughts and solid strides to secure your future in a changed economy. I urge you to visit different individuals reactions, connected toward the finish of m post. 4 Ways To Prepare For Your Upcoming Job Interview 1. Practice Your Answers Out Loud As insane as this may sound, it is extremely critical to rehearse your interview replies for all to hear. You may have gone through hours practicing the appropriate responses in your mind yet when you go to open your mouth, only from time to time does the appropriate response come out like what you were rehearsing. Regardless of whether it is before the mirror, on record, or via telephone with your cousin Isabelle in Massachusetts, just do it. An entertainer in one of my talking classes told us about the 3 steps actors use to practice lines: Remember Disguise Customize You dont need to sound mechanical, you need your responses to sound fresh. Thats one of the keys. I additionally have heard individuals reveal to me that they dont need to memorize their answer, that they are better winging it. As you can envision, they are not in the same class as they might suspect. Each time you practice for all to hear you will feel progressively certain about your answer. It becomes crisper. in particular it turns out to be increasingly succinct. 2. Do Your Research Before the Interview Create accomplishment stories that will explicitly identify with the activity and friends you will be interviewing for. Know these accounts and know why they are significant to the questioner. Research the organization and individual you will meet for. It will give you a degree of solace going into the conversation. Search for their name and friends inside Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. 3. Get ready Questions You Will Ask During the Interview Notwithstanding organization and occupation explicit inquiries, get ready open-ended, non-driving inquiries. What are the most significant factors influencing your business today? What is the best interest for your services or item? How would you vary from your opposition? Describe your star employee. What are the characteristics of individuals who perform best in this? On the off chance that this organization was referred to for 3 things as a work environment, what do you think those 3 would be? What patterns do you find in the future that will influence your association and industry? By asking these open-finished inquiries, you permit the questioner to talk about the issues that are generally essential to them-right now. Listen cautiously to which path they decided to take as they answer. You may think you know the answers, however the questioner may have an alternate rationale. Dont spare every one of your inquiries for the end. The meeting ought to be a dialog with your interviewer. The stream ought to go something like this: They ask you an inquiry. You give an answer and ask them a question. They pose another inquiry. Be that as it may, if the interviewer is unpracticed this can be very challenging. They may do all the talking. Listen dutifully. Be cautious not to undermine their self images by interfering. 4. One final Suggestion Build up another mantra, maybe thinking contrastingly will permit you to approach this occasion absolutely differently. Instead of reasoning I want this work, I need this activity change your programming to DO I WANT THIS JOB? Plunk Down and Panic. How to Manage Your Career with Social Channels

How to Manage Your Career with Social Channels Recruiters [like me] use social media to connect with talented people â€" and connect them with pretty amazing companies.  But, what happens when you’re an active job seeker â€" but not active on social media? Does that mean you won’t find a job? Yes and no. Quick fact: 35% of employers are less likely to interview applicants they can’t find online -CareerBuilder Survey So, how does a job seeker [whether active or maybe just “window shopping”] bridge the gap between being a non-social savvy job seeker to a job seeker that can essentially get headhunted by a recruiter [like me] using social channels? Let’s start with the basics… I chat with many job seekers every week â€" one common question I’m asked: “Which social media platforms should I be on to get noticed by a recruiter?” I always reply: “It depends.” Tip: Determine who your audience is. [i.e. Audience= recruiters/companies/CTOs] If you’re an active job seeker the no-brainer-thing-to-do: create a LinkedIn profile [it’s free]. You may also want to create a Twitter Instagram account as well [I’ll get to that part later]. Tip: If you’re an Interaction Designer looking for work â€" is LinkedIn ideal? Yes and no. It can be difficult to showcase your portfolio on LinkedIn- but what about creating a Dribbble account? BINGO! The main idea understand who your ‘audience’ is before you sign up for any social channel. Next comes the social media audit. What does that mean? Review any Social Media Platforms you currently use: Website (if applicable) LinkedIn (if applicable) Facebook Twitter Instagram Tip: If you decide to use [Facebook, Twitter, Instagram] to support your job search efforts- review the content that is posted on these channels. Tip: If the channels noted above are chosen for personal use ensure you review your privacy settings. Now, let’s start with some basics [Resume vs. LinkedIn] From my experience I prefer LinkedIn; however, recruiters, hiring managers and companies still prefer to see a resume as well. Note: you can also download a PDF version of your LinkedIn page [this may pass as a resume for some jobs you apply for]. After either creating a LinkedIn account [check out their help section if you need support with this] or logging into an existing account: this is where the magic happens. Let’s start with giving your LinkedIn profile life: Ensure your Profile is up-to-date [including the summary section ensure there is content under your employer section [i.e. you can include years of experience, clients you’ve worked with, skills you’ve mastered, industry events you attend] Also include a portfolio in your summary section [especially for designers] Ask for testimonials [from previous employers, colleagues, schoolmates] Showcase Skills [I’ll get to this part soon] Tip: Avoid titles like: Ninja, Guru, Self-employed, Looking for Opportunity. Why? When recruiters do a Boolean search string in Google â€" they’re searching for specific titles that are relevant to the jobs they are promoting [i.e. Software Engineer OR Communications Specialist] Tip: Are you a contractor or consultant? I’d recommend the following as your title header: Software Consultant â€"Next available for work February 1 Tip: What about a remote contractor? LinkedIn users can change their location to remote â€" I’d recommend not listing your location as ‘worldwide’. Want to be contacted? Easy. Include your email address in either the summary section of your LinkedIn profile OR include it in the ‘Advice for Contacting’ section on your profileâ€" [you can also include any other forms of contact based on your preference]. Want to connect with Recruiters at the company you wish to work for? Go for it! Not sure where find them? Quick tip:  Search recruiters on LinkedIn. Make sure to complete an advanced search. See below. Next â€" Twitter/Instagram Tip: use the same profile picture for all your social media profiles to create consistency. It will help recruiters recognize you. Tip: By adding appropriate links [i.e. LinkedIn profile link or personal website] to your Twitter or Instagram account this will allow a recruiter to be able to reach out to you. These are just a few tips and tricks to allow you to proactively manage your career using social media â€" you can also stick to the basics by applying for roles on Indeed and Monster â€" determine what works best for you and your job search efforts!

How to Get Past Your Biggest Career Obstacles - Classy Career Girl

How to Get Past Your Biggest Career Obstacles In my research with talking to thousands of women stuck in their careers, there are three most common career obstacles  that hold women back from launching their  dream careers. I find it best that we just get all this in the open, so you become aware of your roadblocks. Once you know what is holding you back, then you can tackle it and move forward. Which of these career obstacles is standing between you and your dream career? How to Get Past Your Biggest Career Obstacles 1. Time How to find the time to launch your dream career? This is one of the most common questions and issues I  receive. Here are some things that I hear over and over again that you’re dealing with procrastination, there’s more to do than time allows and you’re missing out on your family. You’re really having a hard time finding balance, and you’re really not sure how to carve out me time.  You really don’t want to waste your time either and you really want to get this dream career launched fast. [RELATED: 7 Essential Steps To Your Dream Career] 2. Fear A lot of you are backing off from what you truly want to do because you’re hesitant to be who you really are. You have  a fear of being yourself. You’re also losing confidence in yourself. You have a lot of self-doubts and are really scared or feeling guilty to launch your dreams. You are  thinking, Am I good enough to make my dreams to a reality? Am I ever going to get hired? I’m never going to get hired. I’m never going to be able to launch my dream business. You are afraid to dream too BIG. These are the things I hear from you over and over again. Some of this might ring true for you. Then there’s also a fear of living up to other people’s expectations and having lots of constant negative thoughts. What if it doesn’t work? This is your mindset.  The good news is, you can move past fear.   3. Direction You have so many ideas, but you have no solid plan of action, and you are not sure where, to begin with launching your dream career.  You are fine tuning all your ideas, and you want someone who’s going to really help you do that because you are feeling so disorganized. Instead of moving forward, you are just standing still. I’ve been there too, but guess what? Reading this blog post truly is your first step to getting unstuck. Identifying where you are at right now is your starting point. These are your roadblocks. So this is what you are battling now but where you want to be I want you to visualize for a second. Sometimes we never really let ourselves dream. It’s really important that you identify what you want and what your desires are. Not what your shoulds are. The second step to getting unstuck is figuring out what YOU really  want and targeting your destination. Its all about  making a no excuses policy with yourself that you can and will achieve the success you want. This is the one thing I did that made my dream career happen. I want all of you to write this down right now Do what you can, from where you are, with everything you’ve got. I did all I could, with what I had, from where I was. At one point, that meant having a 3-month old hanging on my hip who had a tongue tie so I was literally breastfeeding, pumping and then bottle feeding her around the clock. It was crazy, but I kept going in the direction of my dreams. Business School Graduation! Celebrating surviving three years of working full-time, going to school at night and starting this blog on the side! It is all about taking baby steps and imperfect action.  Do what you can, every day. If you do just that, I know you will be a success. So, visualize yourself jumping out of bed and going to work. Even if you don’t exactly know what you want to do yet, it’s ok. Just visualize what your life would be like. Would you be happier? Would you be more fulfilled and excited about life? Would you have more time for your family and social activities? Would you feel proud to tell someone where you work and what you do? Would you feel alive? All these things are possible no matter where you are at right now. I’ve been at rock bottom too, stuck in a job I hated with so many personal things not going my way, including miscarriages, failed IVF, foreclosures, and losing close family members. I know many of you are dealing with major life experiences and career obstacles right now. The one thing that got me through my tough times  was staying focused on my dream career and dream life. I knew it was out there for me and that all of my negative life experiences were for some purpose. That’s the only thing that got me through, and look at where I am now. You can create and live your dream life, just like I have, no matter what you are going through right now or how hard you think it might be to make a complete change.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Beating the Sunday Night Blues

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Beating the Sunday Night Blues When I was a kid, I hated Sunday evenings. I'm sure I wasn't alone -- I think kids throughout the ages have hated Sunday night because it means doing homework and going to bed early because it's a school night. Kids know that on Monday they face another week of teachers, tests and more homework. As an adult, I still get a sort of melancholy feeling when the sun begins to set on Sunday. The weekend is coming to an end, I'm nagging my kids to do their homework, and I think about the new week that will be full of challenges and problems in my professional and personal life. And, again, I know I'm not alone in this feeling. My doctor once admitted to me that he always has to take a sleep aid on Sunday nights because he can't stop thinking about everything he will face at work on Monday. Another colleague told me that she becomes so blue on Sunday afternoons that she plays Billie Holiday and drinks several glasses of wine.I'm not advocating pills or booze to get you through the Sunday night blues, but I do think there's got to be a better way to cope with it all. While it's a good sign that you need to be looking for another job when you start to get depressed on Saturday (been there, done that), I think most of us go through some letdown on Sunday.Wouldn't it be great if we didn't let our jobs take away from our weekends? If we found some ways to make Sunday evenings special instead of depressing?I asked some people what they did to get through the Sunday night blues, and many didn't have an answer. But a few people had some good ideas, and I wanted to share them with you:* Game night. A friend said she gets her kids to do their homework early so that after supper they have a couple hours of play time as a family. She said that keeps everyone occupied with fun instead of contemplating a new week of work or school.* Books and bubbles. A co-worker told me that she always indulges in a good book and a warm bubble bath on Sunday evenings.* Play hard. A neighbor told me t hat the key to dealing with his stress on Sunday evening is to get together with some friends and play basketball at a local rec center. He said the physical exertion helped him sleep better. If you have anything you do to deal with the Sunday blues, I'd love to hear from you and share them with others.del.icio.us
